Two Ways to Search
Subject Search
Change the search field to Subject (normally a drop down menu), then enter in one of the subject terms suggested at the bottom of this page. This will give you fewer results, but the results will be more accurate for the subject term you entered.
Keyword Search
To do this, you don't need to change the search field, just leave it on the default setting that it started on. Some libraries may have the search field set on Any Field. Keyword searching will give you a lot more results but they may not all be helpful to you.
It's best to try both types of searches. If you not sure yet exactly what you are looking for, try a keyword serach. If you are ready to be more specific, try a subject serach.
Subject Terms to Try
Oregon Trail
Oregon National Historic Trail
Overland Trail
California National Historic Trail
Children Pioneers
Frontier and Pioneer Life
Women Pioneers
It's a good idea to start with the term "Oregon Trail", but if that doesn't lead to exactly what you want, try one of the other related terms suggested above. Also, try searching on the Library of Congress Authorities website to discover more subject headings (http://authorities.loc.gov/).

On the Shelves
You've made it to the shelves, now where do you look? If you are in a school or public library, they will most likely use the Dewey Decimal System to organize their resources. If you are in a college library, they will probably use the Library of Congress call numbers. Ask a librarian if you are not sure which call numbers your library uses.
Make sure to look at some of the sections around the suggested numbers as they may contain materials that are related to your topic.
Dewey Decimal Call Numbers
978 General History of North America- Western United States
979 Great Basin and Pacific Slope Region
Library of Congress Call Numbers
F593 The West
